Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue, Inc

Let's put a fork in the anomalous 2019-2020 season which has officially come to a most inglorious end.

It began in October with the never uplifting 4th of July Bowl body recovery...traversed to the more traditional back-to-back-to-back searches at Alpine Meadows (avalanche 1/17/20), a snowmobiler below Barker Pass (1/18/20), and 2 skiers in Grouse canyon (1/19/20)...but then regressed with our best rendition of Laurel and Hardy on an aborted search for an injured skier off Judah (2/8/20) and chasing ghosts at Tinkers Knob....In March we lamented the 5th cancellation of The Great Ski Race in the last 8 years, and of course soon thereafter we started working to perfect a digital internet search & rescue using video tools which is...virtually impossible.

We know not what's in store for the Summer or Fall, but we are an optimistic bunch of fools and so for now we do plan to rendezvous on Monday Oct 5th at 6:30PM at the Granlibakken Ski Hut to reintroduce ourselves, enjoy a group haircut, and eat some leftover spam (although we recommend you consume some leftover salmon).

For that one person who might be asking "What about elections which typically happen at the end of the season?", we have opted for a benevolently democratic coup, with all current officers being held over for another year (sorta like a collegiate gap year...or like failing a grade, you be the judge). So still at the helm:

President  Scott Meyer
Vice President  Matt Jacobs
Treasurer  Scott Schroepfer
Secretary  Joanna Wright
Andrew Oesterreicher
Brad Altman
Calvin Mitchell
Sarah Krammen

Peace out.

The TNSAR Board of Directors has provided this guidance to review procedures and update the TNSAR team on the COVID-19 situation as it relates to SAR activities. It is important to stay grounded and informed in these uncertain times. Please contact any board member should you have questions or concerns.

The TNSAR Board of Directors has also posted a Community Message regarding backcountry travel that we strongly encourage anyone pondering back country adventures to read and contemplate.

TNSAR is applying for a 2019-2020 CA OHV Commission Grant. The Grants and Cooperative Agreements Program provides for well managed off-highway vehicle recreation in the State of California by providing financial assistance to, amongst other groups, nonprofit entities. Public review and comments are encouraged from March 3, 2020 to May 4, 2020, and very helpful instructions are available for you to provide comments specifically concerning TNSAR's grant request. You can support TNSAR by providing providing your comments today. Thank you!

In 2018 TNSAR applied for and was awarded Agency Partnership status with the Truckee Tahoe Airport District. The Truckee Tahoe Airport District is furthering its mission, which is to provide a high level of benefit and value to all Airport District constituents. Through this policy, Agency Partnerships Funds are set aside to partner with another public agency and or taxing agency, town, county, or local government where a specific defined airport benefit to mutual District/agency constituents, direct airport benefits, improvement of District property, shared equipment, and/or enhanced safety is realized. TNSAR and TTAD have embarked on a 20 year partnership agreement which includes the acquisition of the Pisten Bully 100 snow cat and the rollaway truck hauler.

Note that all the trainings, search reports, and newsletter from any particular season (past or present) are under the "Archives" menu drop down at the top of any page.

TNSAR is always looking for fresh faces and new enthusiasm. We are a team of broad roles, interests and needs, to include but not limited to:

  • Searchers (skiers and sledders)
  • Comm Van personnel
  • Truck caretakers
  • Administrative
  • Public Relations
  • Grant and Donation management
  • WWW management
  • TGSR (the list here is endless)

If you are interested in any of these types of roles, or generally interested in TNSAR, please show up at the next general meeting to get your questions answered. The majority of the team representatives are not searchers; we have a variety of needs and seats for all. Come check us out!
