Anxious Snowshoer at Peter Grubb Hut

Submitted by Dirk Schoonmaker

Three snowboarders/snowshoers at the Peter Grubb Hut were anxious because of an incoming storm and one member complained of shortness of breath. Nevada County Sheriff's Office requested our assistance.

6 skiers and 2 snowcat operators headed into the hut at about 2:30 pm. The snowcat faced difficult conditions on the Castle Pass Road due to storm conditions, washouts and downed trees, so the skiers exited and skinned to the hut while the snowcat improved the road and found ways past obstacles.

After reaching the hut, the team calmed and assessed the occupants and determined they were capable of snowshoeing out at a slow pace. Their gear and a dog were distributed among team members and the slow hike back to the snowcat was accomplished without incident.

All teams were out of the field at about 7 pm.
