The Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team holds several training sessions every month throughout the autumn, winter, and spring. Training exercises vary from the ubiquitous terrain familiarization to first aid, avalanche safety or backcountry navigation. The Team trainings are designed to be fun and informative and all Team members are encouraged to attend.

If you provide a training, or otherwise require a reimbursement from TNSAR (for lunch subsidy, equipment purchase, etc), please use this form for reimbursement.

The following were the TNSAR trainings for the 2014 - 2015 season.

OCTOBER 18 (Sat) -- CALIFORNIA AVALANCHE WORKSHOP

The California Avalanche Workshop is a pre-season gathering of snow travelers to share knowledge, learn, laugh, and network. This seminar is modeled after the International Snow Science Workshop and other regional one-day snow and avalanche workshops throughout the west. It will feature a variety of speakers in the morning, then break for lunch (on your own) and return for additional speakers in the afternoon.

OCTOBER 25 (Sat) -- WILDERNESS FIRST AID COURSE

The Team will be hosting a private Wilderness First Aid Course the weekend of 10/25-10/26, 8am-4pm. Sign ups will be first come first serve with priority given to A team/B team/ and then team members. A fully refundable deposit of $150 will be needed to hold your spot on the course. Deposit checks can be mailed to Steve Reynaud, PO Box 1976, Truckee, CA 96160. Checks made out to TNSAR.

NOVEMBER 1 (Sat) -- FIELD COMM DAY

Paul will lead us on a hike on Little and Big Powderhorn Creek from Barker Pass. We will be practicing with the portable repeater, radios and gps. Plan for a full day with 8-10 miles of hiking. Contact Paul for more info.

NOVEMBER 4 (Tue) -- MID-WEEK TRAINING POTPOURRI

Prepare for a full day of hiking with training activities interspersed. Expect surprise scenarios, off trail navigation, and scavenger hunt prizes. Bring GPS, compass, first aid kit, and beacon. Maps will be provided.

NOVEMBER 8 (Sat) -- ALPINE TO TWIN PEAKS-TERRAIN FAMILIARZATION

Join Joe for a fun filled day hiking on the PCT trail from Alpine to Twin Peaks and beyond. This terrain is prime time search terrain for the team in the winter and summer months. Call Joe for more info.

NOVEMBER 19 (Wed) -- GPS AND BEACON PRACTICE

Jimmy will lead a GPS and Beacon practice training at the Team Garage from 6-9pm. Pull the gear out of the closet, dust off, install new batteries and come and refresh some skills.

DECEMBER 1 (Mon) -- WINTER SPORTS SYMPOSIUM

The Winter Sports Symposium-Get the latest treatment modalities and strategies to manage winter injuries. The Team supports all A Team, B Team and Team Members with funding to attend. You must register yourself and refund will be given out at night of event.

DECEMBER 11 (Thu) -- TNSAR 101 TRAINING

New Member Essentials. I’m a member, I have my OES card, I’ve been to some trainings, now what? Who: TNSAR members or aspiring members seeking to get more involved in SAR. This training will give new members and members with limited search experience valuable insight to the dynamics of TNSAR. You can count on hands on experience and the knowledge to help you prepare for your first or next SAR.

DECEMBER 13 (Sat) -- SNOWCAT 101

Join past president and team member extraordinaire, Russ Viehmann for a mock search in the often scoured Ward Canyon adjacent to Alpine Meadows.

DECEMBER 20 (Sat) -- MOCK SEARCH

Doug Read will be leading a mock search training at the Bradley Hut on Saturday 12/20-be at hut by 9am. A group will be heading out Friday afternoon at 2pm and will be sleeping in the hut. Come out for a fun fill overnight.

JANUARY 4 (Sun) -- SIERRA CREST SKI TOUR

Get fired up for the New Year with a ski tour from the bottom of the Truckee River Canyon to the Sierra Crest. Work off the holiday excess by breaking trail through all the new snow! Navigation, communication, and avalanche awareness will be the focuses of this all day affair.

JANUARY 10 (Sat) -- TNSAR AVALANCHE REFRESHER

The Team will be putting on our annual avalanche refresher course on January 10th. Class size is limited to 14 folks, you must contact Steve to get your name on the list before the training. First come first serve. This will be an all day training.

JANUARY 11 (Sun) -- SOUTH LAKE AND BEYOND

Join Board Member Sara Carbonari for a journey to the southern reaches of the lake to explore areas we are often called upon for mutual aid while brushing up on safe travel practices, navigation and companion rescue.

Drop in at any time for help with maps/grids/datums, CalTopo and other mapping tools, and moving data on and off your GPS. There will be some exercises to work on, or just stop by to get your questions answered. 6-10pm.

CANCELLED. If you are interested in getting involved with TNSAR this is one of the faster ways to participate. This is a how-to and inside tour of the comm van. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the team. The comm van team can make a huge difference in the overall SAR experience and this training will get you ready to join the team at the next SAR.

JANUARY 28 (Wed) -- NIGHTTIME MAP AND COMPASS/GPS NAVIGATION
