Training

The Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team holds several training sessions every month throughout the autumn, winter, and spring. Training exercises vary from the ubiquitous terrain familiarization to first aid, avalanche safety or backcountry navigation. The Team trainings are designed to be fun and informative and all Team members are encouraged to attend.

If you provide a training, or otherwise require a reimbursement from TNSAR (for lunch subsidy, equipment purchase, etc), please use this form for reimbursement.

The following were the TNSAR trainings for the 2017 - 2018 season.

OCTOBER 7 (Sat) -- SAR YUBA GAP TRAINING

Brendan Compton from Placer County 4X4 Team along with a planning committee is hosting an official all team training day on Saturday, October 7, 2017 in the Yuba Gap area of Placer County. It will include a full day training beginning at 0730hrs and wrapping up around 1800hrs. The training is open to all PCSAR teams using their respective specialties and equipment. The invite also goes out to Tahoe Nordic members and Nevada County Search and Rescue, which will create a diverse training.

The California Avalanche Workshop is a pre-season gathering of snow travelers to share knowledge, learn, laugh, and network. This seminar is modeled after the International Snow Science Workshop and other regional one-day snow and avalanche workshops throughout the west. If it's dry, lace up your hiking boots, if there's snow, break out the skis. Always a hard time of the year to predict the weather, but one things for sure: it will be a great day in the field with longtime team member Sara, honing our search and navigation skills.

NOVEMBER 12 (Sun) -- MAP AND COMPASS

NOVEMBER 15 (Wed) -- FIELD GPS NAVIGATION & RADIO TRAINING

Come out for an evening training session at TXC. Navigate your way between different waypoints using maps, GPS's and pure intuition in a scavenger hunt style adventure. There will be miscellaneous scenarios to work through as well throughout the evening. We should be done around 9pm.

NOVEMBER 18 (Sat) -- INYO SAR SALINE VALLEY TRAINING

Who: You, your spouse/SO, kids, pets, gold fish/bird, etc. Needs to be mentioned here that your non-sworn in partner, gold fish, etc cannot ride in the county vehicles or participate in the training component of the trip; you’d have to drive your own rig, however they are welcome to be with us in Saline.

DECEMBER 15 (Fri) -- MOTORIZED SPECIFIC LEVEL 1 AVALANCHE COURSE

3 Day (Fri-Sun) motorized specific Level 1 Avalanche course offered in conjunction with Sierra Avalanche Center and covered by OHV Grants, so no cost to the participants. Spots are limited so get in touch with Justin ASAP.

DECEMBER 16 (Sat) -- MOCK SEARCH

MARCH 21 (Wed) -- TECHNICAL KNOTS & ROPE SYSTEMS 101

Knots for beginners. Come get a basic run down on different types of knots or rope systems that we might encounter in the field. Everyone should try to chose one knot from the list below and be prepared to teach it to the rest of the group. What is this knot good for? When would use your knot? When would you NOT use this knot: Figure 8 (on a bight, follow through), water knot, make shift webbing harness, girth hitch, prusik, double fisherman, european death knot, clove hitch, munter hitch

MARCH 24 (Sat) -- SUGAR BOWL TO SQUAW

Join Troy for a Tahoe classic touring between Sugar Bowl and Squaw. Be ready for a full day out. Navigation, operating in avalanche terrain, and efficient travel will be major topics of the day.

CANCELED - Tour around and learn the ins and outs of the oft searched Squaw Valley Ski Resort by longtime patrol member Peter York. Daytime session will be skier focused and the afternoon session will involve snowmos. As always, please call ahead so Peter can get a solid number and secure lift tickets.

APRIL 4 (Wed) -- GROUSE ROCK / TWIN PEAKS TERRAIN FAMILIARIZATION

APRIL 22 (Sun) -- GLACIER TRAVEL AND CREVASSE RESCUE

Been asked by several people to hold this training, so here it is. Bring ice axe, crampons, harness, and any equipment or knowledge you have. We will practice self arrest techniques, crevasse haul systems and snow/rock anchors

APRIL 27 (Fri) -- WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDER/EMT REFRESHER

MAY 12 (Sat) -- WILDERNESS FIRST AID COURSE

This two-day (5/12-5/13) class will give you a Wilderness First Aid certificate valid for 2 years. If you did one of the team's WFA trainings 2 years ago, your certificate is now lapsing and you should come take the class again. See forum for details, let Matt know soon if you plan on going.
