Training

The Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team holds several training sessions every month throughout the autumn, winter, and spring. Training exercises vary from the ubiquitous terrain familiarization to first aid, avalanche safety or backcountry navigation. The Team trainings are designed to be fun and informative and all Team members are encouraged to attend.

If you provide a training, or otherwise require a reimbursement from TNSAR (for lunch subsidy, equipment purchase, etc), please use this form for reimbursement.

The following were the TNSAR trainings for the 2019 - 2020 season.

OCTOBER 10 (Thu) -- ALPINE HIGH ANGLE PART 1

Note: space is limited, so if you haven't already been in contact with Logan, don't expect to be added. We'll be spending a good 4-5 hours climbing and familiarizing on Tram Face. There will be harnesses and helmets available for everyone, but feel free to bring your own if you like.

OCTOBER 26 (Sat) -- PALISADES CREEK TERRAIN FAMILIARIZATION

Come hike a reverse mountain (1st half descent, then climb out) with the "peak" being the North Fork of the American River (downstream from The Cedars). It will be a full day of around 14 miles, focusing on navigation and terrain familiarization.

NOVEMBER 2 (Sat) -- CALIFORNIA AVALANCHE WORKSHOP

6th annual California Avalanche Workshop. This is a preseason knowledge sharing gathering of the backcountry snow traveling tribe and an opportunity to analyze accidents, learn from pros, and network. 9am-5pm. Social and festivities to follow outside on Lakeview Terrace. This won't be an organized training, so no need to check in with Jeff ahead of time. NOVEMBER 11 (Mon) -- NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION

NOVEMBER 13 (Wed) -- AVI PACK/RECCO 101

Come on down for a comprehensive evening covering the use and protocols associated with a critical piece of search gear. Also a chance to deploy your airbag, repack it and refill the canister. Peter will also give a quick primer on the RECCO detector if time allows.

NOVEMBER 17 (Sun) -- ALPINE HIGH ANGLE PART 2

Combination of classroom, field work, and scenario based training on high angle rescue skills and methods. Come prepared to spend most of the day outside. List of gear to bring and other information will be sent to participants. Meet at Rainbow Bridge Parking at 9:00 am. Dirk will be bringing the truck from Tahoe City, contact him if you want to ride along.

NOVEMBER 25 (Mon) -- TEAM TRUCK & NIGHTTIME GPS

We’ll pull gear off the truck and make sure it all still works. The emphasis will be learning how to work with a GPS to navigate to a contrived scenario where you can brush up on your first aid, packaging and/or avi skills. Bring a typical search pack, headlamp and boots as part of the training will take place in the field.

DECEMBER 7 (Sat) -- BRADLEY HUT OVERNIGHT

JANUARY 4 (Sat) -- DIAMOND CROSSING- NEW ROUTE EXPLORATION

This training is to specifically find a new, easier route out of Diamond Crossing. Open to A team skiers, snowmobiles and snowcat drivers. Open to B team with an A team mentor. The plan is to leave Alpine meadows, ski down to diamond crossing and investigate several options out little powderhorn to the snowcat. We will leave garage at 8 sharp. On summit chair at 8:45. JANUARY 18 (Sat) -- RUBICON RESCUE

Andy Anderson will come by and refresh us on the stranded skier pickoff and other systems we have been working on in our high angle trainings. Open to anyone with an OES card. Basic knot rope handling skills are helpfull. This is a short refresh, lasting about 1 1/2 hrs
