TNSAR Search 12/19/2014
Two snowmobilers below Tinker's Knob
Submitted by Dirk Schoonmaker At 4 pm TNSAR was dispatched for the second search of the night for 2 snowmobilers who were lost somewhere off Tinker's Knob, along the Pacific Crest between Squaw Valley and Sugarbowl. They had been snowmobiling and skiing until they got disoriented by the ongoing storm and had snowmobiled into a place they could not get out of. After leaving their snowmobiles due to rugged terrain they had taken to skis, but had no map, no idea where they were and no way to ascend so they decided to bivouac. They were able to call out by smart phone and give coordinates for their location, which showed them SE of Tinker's on the west side of the Pacific Crest, about 600' below the crest. They had a fire going and were not injured.
The TNSAR team snowcat was loaded with 6 skiers at the Cabin Creek trailhead and drove as far as it could toward Tinkers before the road petered out, which was about 2 miles north of Tinker's Knob.
The skiers headed out from there, up into blowing snow, and at about 11 pm were united with the missing snowmobilers/skiers at the coordinates they had sent out by phone. They were in good condition and it was decided to hike them out to a second team snowcat and 5 snowmobilers who were standing by on the east side of the crest above the Bradley Hut, about a mile away.
All searchers were out of the woods by about 2 am.
