17 YO Snowboarder at Sugarbowl

Submitted by Dirk Schoonmaker

Kyle and his dad got off the Lincoln Chair at Sugarbowl for their final run of the day with a storm blowing in. Kyle went wright instead of left and ended up in Emigrant Canyon. 6 skiers (Steve Twomey, Russ Viehmann, Neil Morse, Matt Jacobs, Bernie Mellor and myself) 2 snowcatters (Dave Gleske and Scott Myer) and a snowmobiler (Calvin Mitchell) headed out to find him.

His phone had been pinged and gave a location on Emigrant Creek, so that was the first target area. This was backed up by an observation from team member Logan Conway of a snowboard track in Emigrant Canyon seen in the afternoon as he was conducting an avalanche class.

The skiers were dropped off at Roller Pass and made their way in a whiteout(see map attached) via the safe route to the site of the ping where Kyle was found. He had built an excellent snow cave and was fine. He was escorted to the snowcat and snowmobile, just up stream from Horseshoe Bend and everyone was out of the field at about midnight.
