Training

The Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team holds several training sessions every month throughout the autumn, winter, and spring. Training exercises vary from the ubiquitous terrain familiarization to first aid, avalanche safety or backcountry navigation. The Team trainings are designed to be fun and informative and all Team members are encouraged to attend.

If you provide a training, or otherwise require a reimbursement from TNSAR (for lunch subsidy, equipment purchase, etc), please use this form for reimbursement.

The following were the TNSAR trainings for the 2009 - 2010 season.

OCTOBER 12 (Mon) -- NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION

Calling all new members! Learn how to go on trainings, searches, participate with education, and all the committees that make the team spin. You found out how to get the free beer now come and be an integral part of the team.

OCTOBER 17 (Sat) -- WILDERNESS FIRST AID COURSE

Class is full. The class will be held at the newer east Squaw Valley Fire Dept. both days 8:30-5pm. Bring your normal search/day pack and some warm clothes, class will be inside and outside.

OCTOBER 19 (Mon) -- MAP AND COMPASS TRAINING

Do you know how to read a topo map? Can you locate your position on a map in the field? Come learn the basics of map and compass use.

OCTOBER 25 (Sun) -- HIGH ANGLE RESCUE TRAINING

Practice rope and rescue skills in high angle terrain on rock at Donner Summit. These skills will be the foundation and will crossover to snow and ice, what our team specializes in the winter time.

NOVEMBER 5 (Thu) -- COMM VAN TRAINING

Learn the inner workings of the Comm Van. If you are interested in going on trainings this is one of the faster ways to participate.

NOVEMBER 10 (Tue) -- ANATOMY OF A SEARCH/COORDINATOR INVOLVEMENT

How does a search work? Who gets called, how do you become a coordinator? This training will cover how a search begins from the reporting party to police involement to the team's response.

NOVEMBER 12 (Thu) -- GPS INDOOR TRAINING/PRACTICE

Come join Gerald and get hands on instruction on how to use a GPS in a warm cozy indoor environment. Perfect for the beginner or as a refresher that most of us need on a yearly basis. Plan on 6:30-8:30pm and location will be announced.

NOVEMBER 14 (Sat) -- MT. ROSE HIKE

Sara will be leading a hike in the Mt. Rose area with a medical scenario during the day for practice. Bring your normal search pack and come enjoy the fall weather. T's rotisserie to follow a rigorous training day.

NOVEMBER 17 (Tue) -- GPS OUTDOOR NIGHT TRAINING

Meet @ Tahoe Cross Country parking lot in the Highlands. GPS practice from 6-8pm. Let Mike know you are coming, bring your GPS or arrange to borrow one from the truck.

DECEMBER 7 (Mon) -- 2009 WINTER SPORTS INJURY SYMPOSIUM

DECEMBER 13 (Sun) -- MT. ROSE SKI TRAINING

DECEMBER 19 (Sat) -- BRADLEY HUT-POLE CREEK HELICOPTER TRAINING

DECEMBER 20 (Sun) -- MOCK SEARCH AND PLB TRAINING

Join Russ for a beautiful day on the west shore of Lake Tahoe-our premiere ski terrain. We will be familiarizing ourselves with the terrain while getting in some superb backcountry skiing.

JANUARY 20 (Wed) -- POSTPONED:DONNER PEAK TERRAIN FAMILIARIZATION

JANUARY 28 (Thu) -- AIARE AVALANCHE LEVEL 1 COURSE

Avalanche Level 1 Course: Thursday Jan. 28/Friday Jan 29, 5-9pm. Sat/Sun Jan 30-31, 8-5pm. Fully refundable deposit of $275 to hold your spot which you will get back at the end of course. Limited to 14 participants.

FEBRUARY 3 (Wed) -- DESOLATION WILDERNESS SKI TOUR

MARCH 28 (Sun) -- SQUAW VALLEY USA TRAINING

APRIL 15 (Thu) -- NORTHSTAR "TAX RELIEF" TRAINING DAY

APRIL 30 (Fri) -- AUBURN SAR TRAINING

Equipment: Snowmobiles, SAR truck for towing (if available), rescue sled.

Training: The Snowmobile Group & possibly Auburn snowcat will train in the area from Cabin Creek to Cold Stream Canyon . We will work on terrain familiarization, navigation, avalanche beacon tracking, radio comms and snowmobile handling off trail. I would also like to give our rescue sled a try.

JUNE 26 (Sat) -- SUMMER TERRAIN FAMILIARIZATION
